REBAC and ENA Congratulate Sister Alessandra Smerilli on Her Vatican Appointment
Kinshasa, 1 July 2026 – The Ecclesial Network of the Congo Basin (REBAC) and the Ecclesial Networks Alliance for Integral Ecology (ENA) rejoice at the appointment of Reverend Sister Alessandra Smerilli, FMA, as Prefect of the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development of the Holy See, an appointment made public on 30 June 2026 by Pope Leo XIV. We extend to Sister Smerilli our warmest congratulations on this distinction, which honours her commitment, competence, and service to the Church’s social mission.
We also wish to pay tribute to Cardinal Michael Czerny, SJ, for the years of collaboration between our two networks and the Dicastery. His support and dedication accompanied us throughout his mandate. Sister Alessandra assumes this responsibility with extensive experience within the Dicastery and a strong understanding of our networks. Her theological insight, knowledge of economic and international issues, and her record of service will be invaluable assets in addressing current challenges.
REBAC and ENA also commend Pope Leo XIV for this appointment, which reflects a commitment to promoting women within the structures of the Holy See.
As networks committed to defending diverse biomes and promoting integral ecology, we look forward to continuing and strengthening our collaboration with the Dicastery under Sister Smerilli’s leadership, so that together we may work towards a more just, united, and sustainable world.
REBAC and ENA reaffirm their support and friendship to the Dicastery and extend their best wishes for success to Sister Alessandra Smerilli in carrying out her new mission.
