About us

The Ecclesial Network for the Congo River Basin (REBAC) was conceived in March 2015 in Windhoek, Namibia. Inspired by the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network (REPAM), the Regional and National Justice and Peace Commissions of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) launched the initiative to protect and rehabilitate the Congo Basin’s equatorial forest.

At its inception, REBAC focused on six countries within this vital ecosystem: Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This region, often referred to as one of the “biodiverse lungs” of our planet, has been highlighted by Pope Francis in Laudato Si (n.38): “Let us mention … those richly biodiverse lungs of our planet which are the Amazon and the Congo basins.”

Our Vision

REBAC’s central vision is to save and rehabilitate the Congo forest, ensuring that this irreplaceable ecological treasure continues to sustain life, culture, and biodiversity for generations to come. The Congo Basin is not only a natural sanctuary but also a spiritual and social heritage that calls for protection and renewal.

A Project of Pope Francis

REBAC is deeply rooted in the vision of Pope Francis, who has consistently called the global community to ecological conversion. Through Laudato Si, he reminds us that the Congo Basin is a gift to humanity, a source of life and hope. REBAC embodies this call, serving as a project of Pope Francis for the people of the Congo, uniting faith, justice, and ecology in the mission to protect and restore the forest for the common good.

Institutional Endorsement

In February 2016, SECAM’s Standing Committee formally approved the project, affirming its commitment through a position paper on the creation of an African ecclesial network dedicated to the protection of the Congo Basin forest.

Later, in July 2016, the Plenary Assembly of SECAM in Luanda officially confirmed the REBAC program, marking the beginning of a coordinated ecclesial response to safeguard this vital ecosystem………….More
